Studio to gallery – Install and curation 26 May

The team of four artists spent all yesterday in the gallery. We feel connected now and also able realise the concepts in relation to each other’s perspectives. This has been a positive growth experience on several levels

Min woo Lee’s curation of the show has developed our concepts of suspension in time and place on site.  He uses two projections of filmed landscapes of the gondola lift rides traversing in two directions. Views over Mt Cangshan ranges are played in theatre mode with a sense of double displacement. Lee’s folded square photographic prints framed and placed at opposite ends of the front gallery take the viewer on polar opposite journeys of Cangshan and Lake Erhai. My main theme of biospheres on textiles wander from the leaf walk to the clouds using the traces of plants and wings as eco print and embroidery on cloth. Moving around the gallery in time and space. Looping the poetic visions of Kubla Khan via Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Xanadu and the 13th century Kingdom of Dali around todays vistas.

Jui Pin Chang’s multi coloured paper cut stencil  installation has emerged from apple (cut) laden trees to a forest grove as the gallery lights illuminate the central works. The lacework trees now grow exponentially from her hexagonal tree frames.

Ariane Blais has thrown paint in every abstract direction to bring the local weather and climate changes so apparent in Dali as an overriding force of nature under the shadow and crowning clouds. The underworld figures hidden in each work beckon and speak to the viewer’s mindset.

The show opens tonight. Welcome Dali to contemporary art device.

Lights on …. nexus.
